Kimberly Lyons is a Master Maine Guide and owns Ktaadn Guide Service in Woodsville, Maine. She is quick to point out that while there are only a few female bear guides currently in Maine, the first person ever to be granted a guide’s license by the state was Cornelia “Fly Rod” Crosby in the late 19th century. Crosby was actually a pioneer in many ways. She wrote under the pen name “Fly Rod” early on when it was believed that men would not buy magazines with articles written by women about the outdoors. Later, after gaining worldwide recognition, she toured the country promoting hunting and fishing, and became friends with Annie Oakley. “Even though it was long before my time I consider her my mentor,” said Lyons.
